A-04 · About

I am Mark, and I live up the hill from you.

Sawaf Services is one person. That is the whole company. When you ring the number, I answer it, and the person who quotes the job is the person who does the job and the person who picks up when it goes wrong eight months later.

01 Why this exists In my own words

Very little of this work is difficult.

I have spent my working life around computers, networks, and the small unremarkable systems a business depends on without ever quite noticing, right up until the morning one of them stops.

The hard part was never the technology. The hard part is that this work belongs to no one. A business will run for years on a setup that holds together mostly by luck, assembled by whoever was nearest a keyboard in 2019. Everyone knows it. There is never a good week to deal with it, and the person who understands it best is usually the office manager, who has an actual job.

I would rather tell you something is not worth doing than sell you a bigger version of it.

So the pitch is not that I am cleverer than the last person. It is that this is my job rather than an interruption to it, that I will write down what I did, and that when I tell you a thing does not need fixing, I am not saving that opinion up for a bigger invoice later.

If a forty dollar subscription solves your problem, I will say so, and you can decide whether you still want me involved. I would rather be the person you call in three years than the person who billed you well once.

02 General notes These are commitments, not slogans

How I work, written down.

Hold me to any of these. They are the reason to hire a person rather than a company.

  • 2.1

You get a number before I start. If the work turns out to be larger than the number, you hear about it while there is still a decision to make.

  • 2.2

Everything is in your name. Domains, licences, cloud accounts, the router password. If we part ways, you lose nothing but my phone number.

  • 2.3

No commissions, no referral fees. Nobody pays me to recommend their product, which is why I can tell you when the cheap one is fine.

  • 2.4

Plain English, always. If I say something you do not understand, that is my failure and not yours, and you should stop me.

  • 2.5

The backup gets tested in front of you. Not described. Not assumed. Restored, while you watch, before I call the job done.

  • 2.6

I will tell you when to spend nothing. The advice that costs me money is the only advice worth trusting the rest of.

03 Where I work On site, and beyond

Mission, and about an hour in each direction.

On site covers Mission, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Harrison, Pitt Meadows and the places in between. If you are in the Valley, I can be standing in your office.

Remote covers anywhere in Canada, and a good deal more of this work is remote than people expect. The half hour it would take me to drive to you is half an hour you are paying for, so if the job can be done down a wire, it gets done down a wire.
